Grandmaster Warm Up 9 Review
Mastermix Ambassador and Award Winning Wedding DJ, Alan Marshall, reviews the latest album in the Grandmaster Warm Up range.
I was fortunate to get an early listen to this mix, and it’s been on loop in the office ever since! I have even played it out live at my events at the first opportunity.
With a tempo of 103 – 122 BPM, the mix begins with the silky vocals of Jane Eugene, lead vocalist for Loose Ends with a the Frankie Knuckles remix of their hit from 1985 Hangin’ On A String. It then blends seamlessly into Remember Me (Sure Is Pure 12″ Remix) by The Blueboy.
A personal favourite turns up in the mix – ‘It’s My House’ 12″ Remix by Diana Ross, originally from her 1979 album “The Boss.” Diana also reappears towards the end of the mix sampled by Mousse T & Lovebirds with Closer To You. Considering that she is getting lots of airplay with her new single “Thank You”, the inclusion feels very timely.
Other standout tunes for me in the mix include ‘Soup for One’ by Chic. You may remember that was sampled by Modjo for their single “Lady (Hear Me Tonight)”.
A great version of ‘Rock With You’ from the man that produced the original, Quincy Jones, also appears in the mix. This time it features Brandy & Heavy D, who sounds remarkably like Will Smith on the rap section of this song.
The 1982 classic by Indeep ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’ gets a very cool reworking by Blacknuss.
The mix concludes after 79 minutes of pure class with the laidback ‘Heartbreaker’ featuring the distinctive vocals of Danielle Moore.
I love how Mastermix digs deep to find cool remixes or interpretations of classics tracks. This empowers and enables DJs to elevate their performances. For me, the track selection makes this the best Grandmaster so far.
Lounge & Bar Grooves has that perfect bar feel, but works equally well at a wedding reception as a warm-up.
As with previous Sessions mixes and Grandmaster Warm Up 8 – Balearic Beats, this release sits alongside two Crates of tracks that complement the mix.
