Forgotten 90s DJ Playlists

The 90s has seen a new level of popularity and with it an increased demand for Mastermix to offer even more music from that decade. We have already created The 100 Collection: 90s & accompanying Top Up album so we decided to create something unique to complement them in the shape of Essential Hits: Forgotten 90s.

The word ‘forgotten’ may imply that they are forgotten because they aren’t playable anymore, but that really couldn’t be further from the truth. Some artists have numerous hits or one huge hit, meaning their other releases get ‘forgotten’ and that’s where Mastermix come in.

Artists including Kylie, Bon Jovi, Madonna & Blur have all enjoyed huge amounts of hits but aside from the obvious tracks you always seem to play, there are other options available to you that will get the desired reaction from your audiences:

  • Kylie Minogue – Shocked
  • Bon Jovi – In These Arms
  • Madonna – Justify My Love
  • Blur – The Universal

The 90s was an eclectic decade with tracks including:

  • Goo Goo Dolls – Iris
  • LL Cool J – Mama Said Knock You Out
  • Betty Boo – Where Are You Baby
  • Lightning Seeds – Marvellous

All big tracks but often overlooked when playing 90s music. Whether it’s a 90s theme night or you are playing a few 90s as part of a DJ set at one of your events, by adding a forgotten hit you can showcase your music knowledge and take your audiences on a musical journey. Adding a few one-hit wonders to a 90s set is something to consider:

  • Ann Lee – 2 Times
  • Guru Josh – Infinity
  • Sugar Ray – Every Morning
  • Gun – Word Up

or some forgotten party hits:

  • Suggs – Cecelia
  • Cyndi Lauper – Hey Now (Girls Just Want To Have Fun)
  • Right Said Fred – Don’t Talk Just Kiss
  • Janet Jackson – Whoops Now

and the 90s gave us some amazing Indie / Rock anthems:

Oasis – Cigarettes & Alcohol
Suede – The Wild Ones
James – Ring The Bells
Pearl Jam – Daughter
Monaco – What Do You Want From Me

The 90s gave us some eclectic music styles that in turn delivered some wonderful songs. Whilst the obvious hits will always be popular, it’s our job as a DJ to offer our clients alternatives to help them create unique music solutions for their guests which can lead to some interesting results on the dancefloor.

Mastermix have created Essential Hits Forgogtten 90s that has all you need to create an innovative 90s DJ set. The collection has a unique DJ-friendly formula that includes 40 huge tracks that are complemented by 10 Transition tracks giving you 50 massive anthems to add to your DJ music library.

Mastermix Label Manager Richard Lee provides inspiration for Summer Dance tracks and playlists.

The sun is shining, there isn’t a cloud in the sky and you’re looking to create a musical vibe to accompany the weather. Well maybe the weather isn’t always on our side in the UK but that doesn’t stop you creating a summer feel with the music you play for your guests. Whether playing an outside set whilst the sun beats down or inside as part of the main party, a Summer Dance vibe is always going to hit the mark with audiences of all ages.

Summer Dance Tracks

There are so many tracks that can be played to create a Summer vibe but if you want to take the party to a whole new level of euphoria then injecting some dance classics is going to help.

There are some songs that are obvious Summer Dance anthems including:

  • ‘Samba De Janeiro’ – Bellini
  • ‘Sunshine’ – David Guetta & Avicii
  • ‘E Samba’ – Junior Jack
  • ‘Destination Calabria’ – Alex Guadino feat. Crystal Waters

Dance styles like Deep House, Trance & Funky House can all be used as well as some Euro Dance Party tracks like:

  • ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’ – Shana Vanguarde
  • ‘One Night In Bangkok’ – Vinylshakerz

Northern Soul DJ Playlists

Award winning Wedding DJ and Mastermix Ambassador, Alan Marshall, delves into the Northern Soul genre and some alternative DJ playlists.

When it comes to Northern Soul music it can sometimes be a bit of a minefield to know what to play. Just ask in a DJ forum for suggestions as a colleague of mine did recently to discover the mixed views of what constitutes a Northern Soul track.

Before I get into the reason, let me bring you up to speed for those that maybe don’t know what Northern Soul music is and its origins.

Northern Soul Origins

Northern Soul music emerged from the North of England and the Midlands in the late 1960s and connected to the mod scene. It was a style of music that had its origins in black American soul music from the mid-sixties predominately but not exclusively out of Detroit, Michigan, the home of Hitsville USA studios and Motown records.

Introducing Northern Soul Into A DJ Set

That is where the challenge starts. The Motown tracks that became commercial hits were considered a pop record, not a soul record and certainly not northern for the Northern Soul fan. The Northern Soul DJs sought out the rare, previously overlooked records that they would play at clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Blackpool Mecca and the Wigan Casino.

Now this is always a subject that will divide opinions with the true fans of the genre digging in with staying true to the origins or, better put, “Keeping The Faith.” As a wedding DJ, however, I know if I was requested to play some Northern Soul at a wedding reception, my job is to keep everyone happy on the dancefloor. The use of transition tracks plus a few Northern Soul classics is likely to do that.

Filling The Knowledge Gap

But I hear you; how do I know? Well, yet again, Mastermix has done the heavy lifting for you with Essential Hits – Northern Soul, a new collection that includes enough tracks to satisfy any Northern Soul fans at your wedding and maintain the dancefloor with transition tracks that keep the rest of the guests happy.
